Last of the radio westerns
Years ago I bought a Radio Spirits tape collection of various westerns, three episodes to a tape. I remember being mildly intrigued by the tape with Luke Slaughter, because I'd never heard of it or Sam Buffington, the star. Although the show isn't up to the standard of Gunsmoke or The Six Shooter, the writing is above average, and Buffington does a better than average job of presenting a man who's tough and uncompromising while, at the same time, offering a personality that is somewhat cultured and principled. If he had lived, he might have broken out as a television star. At the same time, the writers went to the trouble to represent a fairly genuine picture of frontier Arizona, using actual place names and geography, plus a touch of history here and there. This show came along just as network radio drama was about to disappear, and it's a bit of a surprise to see how hard the people behind the scenes worked to give the audience something real and genuine as the doors were closing on radio drama.
