Gunsmoke--Dead or Alive
Scholars of Old Time Radio mention a small number of shows that are timeless and of exceptional quality. The Shadow, Suspense, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, and a few others inhabit such lists. There were few western dramas not aimed at children, and the best of this group is always listed as Gunsmoke. What makes Gunsmoke so compelling is that it never turns away from uncomfortable subjects. Women are often at the heart of many of the best stories, and often they are victims of unspeakable cruelty. It falls to Marshal Dillon and his friends Doc Adams, Chester, and Kitty Russell, to aid him in what is often an imperfect kind of justice. Dillon, himself, is a thoroughly modern character. Long before anyone knew about PTSD, the listener can discern in Dillon's character a man who has seen, and done, so much ugliness that one wonders how he lives with it. It is plain from his behavior and sometimes his voice-over narration, that he wonders, as well. This series is well over fifty years old at this point, but it sounds like it was recorded just last week.
